What is an Oscar?
The academy awards or Oscars have been presented since 1929. The award is a gold plated statuette made of tin, copper and antimony. It is 34.3cm high and weighs 3.8kg.


Why is it called an Oscar?
According to legend, academy librarian Margaret Herrick named it when she declared that the statuette looked like her uncle Oscar!

Who decides who wins?
Members of the us academy of motion picture arts & science members, including previous nominees and winners, vote to create a shortlist of five nominees in each of 24 categories , other than special, honorarx and technical awards.

Who can win an Oscar?
The main categories are best picture, best director, best actress, best supporting actor and best supporting actress. Other awards eg are screenplay, cinematography, soundtrack, documentary, animated feature, foreign film.

Last black and white film to win best picture are the apartment and schindler's .
